CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Meher was very disgusted by what was registered at the police station against her daughter. She burned with anger and could have killed Rajul Agnihotri. But she knew how necessary it was for her to restrain herself. Everything seemed against her daughter. What was she to do?

Meher walked towards Rajul’s house. She had formed a rather clear picture about where he lived and what his house looked like. She was absorbed in his thoughts as she walked. The villain had tried to ruin her daughter; she had to ruin him before it was too late. The best form of defense was a good offence, she thought. She had been gentle too long. This was the time for her to make it safe for her daughter or she would repent for the rest of her life. There wasn’t a soul she could approach to help her; she had lived so cut off from people. It was she who had to do everything. Woman was ultimately alone, she was convinced. Man could only be relied upon to ravish and ravage. He was never any good otherwise, she thought.

It was a hot August morning when Meher set out to meet the man whose address she had gotten from the police. Only someone in desperation would walk out of the house on foot. It hadn’t rained since that awful evening when Saba had walked over to her troubles. Meher strode down a road with virtually no traffic. Between her house and Rajul Agnihotri’s residence there was a solitary teashop, where Saba had planned to stop and have tea on that ugly evening.

Rajul was equally restless and couldn’t help setting out to find Saba’s residence. He needed to know where exactly she lived and who else was staying in her house. She probably couldn’t have been too far away from where he lived because that day she was on foot, taking an evening walk when the rain caught her. His passion was very different from Meher’s. Though both could even kill each other if the need arose, each was careful not to let out the storm brewing inside. He saw Meher coming towards him and like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, went straight to her.

‘Auntie, would you know if a girl by the name of Saba Meher lives somewhere close by, here?’

Meher was stung by the question. But she had to deal with this smartly. Within a second she had her answer ready.

‘Of course I do! I am her mother.’

‘Oh, you are her mother? Then you will tell me how I can meet her.’

‘Yes, I can. But who are you?’ ‘I am her class-fellow, Vijay.’

‘Then you are also a student of History?’ she said trying to catch the fellow on the wrong foot with her lies.

‘Yes, I too study history,’ he replied trapping himself. ‘Good to know you. Saba has gone to Hyderabad for a month. She needed a change.’

‘Oh, that is disappointing indeed. I was really keen to meet her.’

Saying this she asked him to walk in the other direction with her and he complied.
